Act Like a Congressman

| | Comments (0)

Nope. We're not talking about free trips to Bermuda or fund raising dinners with the stars, we're talking about the Congressional Research Service, the group that does research for Congress. Now you can get to that information too, over 8,000 reports on all manner of subjects, from all over. Is the United States congress providing this to the taxpayers who paid for it? What do you think?

That's right, they're not.

Instead, a group called the Center For Democracy and Technology is doing it (I know nothing of these people). The link to their research site can be found here.

"American taxpayers spend nearly $100 million a year to fund the Congressional Research Service, a "think tank" that provides reports to members of Congress on a variety of topics relevant to current political events. Yet, these reports are not made available to the public in a way that they can be easily obtained. A project of the Center for Democracy & Technology through the cooperation of several organizations and collectors of CRS Reports, Open CRS provides citizens access to CRS Reports already in the public domain and encourages Congress to provide public access to all CRS Reports."

Seems like a good cause. I'm all for opening up non-classified information on the internet, especially if the public has paid for it. After all, we wrote the check, right?
