Communicating With the Troops

| | Comments (0)

There's an interesting article on the PR wire today (take it for what it's worth). Researchers at the University of Twent in the Netherlands have discovered that screensavers can be one of the most effective means of rapidly delivering communications messages when compared to email and corporate intranets. A nickel says this was sponsored by a company that makes screensavers, but it gets into this entire information overload story which has been running for more than a decade. Companies are actually worried about talking to their own employees? If that's true, weasels are in the woodwork for sure.

This leads me to believe that there might be an opportunity for software development combining P2P, screensavers, and RSS. While this would be a really cool application to write, and I'd love to start on it, I still have to question whether or not people want to be annoyed with information coming out of their screensavers (corporate security issues aside, mind you) Sure, I'll watch the little pipes and lines race around. I even like watching that stuff media player does every now and then. But do I really want to be reminded to get my annual flu shot while I'm picking my nose and staring vacantly off into space?

Recently I created a list of books that hackers recommend to each other -- what are the books super hackers use to help guide them form their own startups and make millions? hn-books might be a site you'd like to check out.
On the low-end of the spectrum, I realized that a lot of people have problems logging into Facebook, of all things. So I created a micro-site to help folks learn how to log-in correctly, and to share various funny pictures and such that folks might like to share with their friends. It's called (appropriately enough) facebook login help
