Don't Get The Lawyers Involved
Word today that Microsoft is suing Google and a former employee over jumping ship. While I think Microsoft has an obligation and every right to protect its intellectual property, this is a waste of time, and a bad sign for the software giant.
First -- good luck making progress. Google has deep pockets also, and you can be sure that they are ready to fight. Second -- whether you win or lose, who does it really benefit? Nobody. Wait. Nobody but the lawyers themselves
What does this mean to me? I think lawyers have infiltrated Microsoft and are going to suck it dry. Not soon -- probably within twenty years or so. Why do I say that? Because Microsoft is starting to view solutions in terms of legal maneuvers, instead of innovation and competition. Need any more evidence? Look at the "patent deluge" the company has put up over the past couple of years. That isn't a sign of strong company, that's a sign of a company that thinks an army of lawyers is going to keep the wolves at bay. I got news for you guys: lawyers ain't going to hack it. If you think computer consultants are bad, just try getting this litigious mentality out of your executive boardroom. Mark my words -- this is the beginning of the end.
Microsoft will try to circumvent the end by many means -- they were a latecomer to political lobbying but seem to have gotten the knack. I've already mentioned the IP lawyer platoon. Buying up competitors and real innovators comes next, but that's only going to create an integration/mission nightmare (which they already have and it's getting worse) What's left after all that? Simple. Look for scapegoats.
So this guy didn't like Microsoft, and Google made him a better offer. Good for him. Should Microsoft a)become more competitive in keeping good employees, b) learn from their mistakes, or c) file a lawsuit and have a good fight?
My opinion only.
