India Update
Looks like SAP is doubling staff in India. Meanwhile, American Airlines is planning direct flights there from Chicago. US News hit the nail on the head the other day, there is an emerging alliance with India that is probably the biggest news this year.
I think it's great that India is doing so well. I'm not going to get into the whole outsourcing debate, but having other countries prosper under a democracy is always a great thing for the rest of the world.
I was speaking with a quality person the other day, and we were talking about all the manufacturing jobs that are moving offshore. He lamented the fact that soon "everything would go"
I'm not so sure that is correct. Look at Hollywood. Other countries have had the ability to make movies for as long as the United States. In fact, it's really not that expensive to make them -- and it never really was. But consistently we see movies being created here. Why? I have not idea. I just think this stuff up, folks. If you want answers, you got to put another quarter in your computer.
My friend said that it probably had to do with promoting freedom and risk-taking. I think this is as good an answer as any. For a long time, Americans have been all too willing to bet a lot of money on purely creative ventures (does the movie "WaterWorld" ring a bell?) We're risk-takers, it's in our blood. We also cherish individual freedom -- it is not many places that celebrate people making movies using their credit cards.
If that theory holds up, then India is definitely a big superstar on the way -- much more so than China. India is growing the culture it needs, and it is fostering closer ties with the US. These are the "new kids on the block". Welcome to the party, guys!
