Speaking Engagment Update
For those of you interested in my upcomning Rational User Group speaking engagment in Raleigh, North Carolina in a couple weeks, attached is the blurb on what to expect.
Where to start:
An Automated Approach To Implementing, Controlling, And Integrating Rational Products
Synopsis: National RUP consultant and software architect Daniel Markham shares his experience implementing and developing in various Rational environments, the creation of a software tool to help implement the Rational Suite, and strategies for working with both large and small organizations.
Abstract: Now that you’ve bought the suite and decided on the process, how do you actually implement the tools and processes so they work for the people in your organization? As a hands-on software architect, process expert, team lead, and mentor, Daniel Markham has taught both the RUP and other process methodologies at every level from a few team members to multi-national organizations with thousands of developers. Along the way, he’s pulled in concepts from statistical science, homeschooling, politics, and capability maturity models. In this presentation, you’ll hear:
- How implementation problems are different and similar between small teams and large groups
- The dangers of implementing RUP in a mixed process/tools environment
- The factors most associated with organizational change failure
- The paradigm shift most needed to make progress in organizational change
- Which tools give you more bang for your buck
- Why “Best Practices implementation makes more problems than it fixes
- The Seven Dwarfs – seven key factors associated with any successful process
At the end of the presentation you’ll hear about the online assessment tool and be given sample reports and handouts. Markham will demonstrate how using the tool will:
- Identify the costs of not improving processes
- Generate detailed diagnostic information for immediate action on Rational tools and processes
- Judge which outside consulting firm understands your organization the best
- Provide early identification that project milestones and product quality may be slipping
- Help integrate your efforts with ISO, CMM, CMMI, ITIL, and other process standards
