The Complaint Department
Ok. Now for the complaints of the week. This week we've really started getting a lot of traffic, and I've found that 1 out of every 500 to 1000 readers has a complaint. Well, I'm listening. And here's my response.
Joshua called me to task on Slashdot for "link farming", by which I think he meant I was spewing links all over
Slashdot. I emailed Joshua, who said he's since visited WTF and sees that it's not a commercial site, so I don't have monetary motives. Sill he makes a good point that when I type in my own sig on every post, it gets through out on to the RSS feed, which was not my intention. I was only having fun making up tags and sigs as I wrote each post, and I meant no harm. I went and re-read anything I could find on Slashdot as far as links go, and as far as I can see, I can write any kind of sig I like. If I'm wrong -- Joshua or somebody at Slashdot let me know. As I told Joshua, I was only having fun writing the posts and linking to similar content I was writing elsewhere. If you liked my post, maybe you'd like to read more. That's all. I think Joshua and I have made our peace on this.
Somebody called "a" complained that by clicking a link on Slashdot he was directed here. There's not much I can do to address this, as the whole idea of clicking on links is to go somewhere else on the web. The site was clearly labeled, and as you can see there is no pornography here nor am I trying to sell you hair enhancement or boost your love life. So "a", sorry that you clicked on a link and it brought you here. If I could understand your complaint better perhaps I could help you out more.
The ruler of the house complained that I did not put enough sourcing material in the "ugly dog" story. She is absolutely correct (as always) and next time I'll do better.
Finally, several follow-up posts to my Slashdot posts pointed out what an awful job I did on some. You guys were entirely right, I wrote most of those posts in a hurry and could have done a better job. (Please see "The Other Slashdot Effect" as an earlier post) There was also some great additional information provided on several of the areas I mentioned -- I learned some neat things about how torpedoes take out ships and I would have loved to got into a longer conversation with Lars regarding effective use of visualization.
So it's been a good week so far. Apologies to those I offended. I did my best to understand your complaints and act on them. If you're still not happy, drop me a line and we'll work on them some more!
