Best Business Tapes for a Techie
There are a lot of business tape sets out there. For a technical person, so many of them seem like "ra-ra-ra" type material. A lot of fluff and little meat. But there are some that really have made a difference to me. Here's the best set of business tapes I have found coming from a technical background. Please feel free to let me know if you've ran into others.
1. Secrets of Power Negotiating. Roger Dawson. Listen to this if you have to sell anything (and we all do). When I first heard these tapes, it doubled my consulting rates overnight.
2. First Things First. Stephen R. Covey. Best time management information on the market today. Combine this with something like the Ascend system and it's a powerful life-changing tool
3. Let's Get Real (Or let's not play). Coming at business development (and requirements gathering) from a completely different angle than Dawson, this series is one of the best business/technical series out there. If you have to meet with business folks and make estimates on how much computer work is required, you got to get this one.
4. The Wisdom Of Crowds. James Surowiecki. It's a simple and easy concept, but we technical people have a hard time with it -- the group is usually better than the sum of the individuals. After I invented the Markham Assessment Tool, I came across this book. It's a must read for anybody in large corporate environments.
5. Mega-Memory. Kevin Trudeau. Kevin has gotten to be quite the snake oil salesman over the last few years, but his first tape set was a winner. I started this set and within a couple of days I was able to memorize all sorts of things quickly and easily! Unfortunately I never finished the set -- something came along and stopped me -- but one summer I'm going to finish it. It was a truly incredible experience to realize that a person could be taught to have a great memory. Amazing!
