Morgellons: The Circus Ramps Up

Is Morgellon's Disease a disease like this?

Recently I posted an article about Morgellons Disease, which I find interesting concept. Especially of interest is how, since we don't know what it is, how do people deal with this uncertainty? Most doctors think Morgellons sufferers have delusions. I guess I can kind of understand that. I mean, after reading a lot about itchy, scratchy, fibers and bumps, I kinda started feeling itchy myself! Sounds like a mild case of "Medical Student's Disease", where for decades students studying various diseases suddenly become convinced they have them.

Or is it a disease like this?

I don't know. Is it all in people's heads? I mean, at the end of the day, all we have is our perceptions of reality. If I think I have bugs crawling around in my skin that's bad no matter what, right? Which, I think is what the doctors are saying -- "since we can't figure it out, we'll just assume it is inside your head, not outside"

That sounds like a cop-out to me, but what do I know? I DO know that the news stories around Morgellons are getting wackier than ever. Take a look at some of what's been going on recently:

Popular Mechanics is running a story on the disease. You always know it has news value when Popular Mechanics runs a story on it. Although -- beats me what this has to do with mechanics. Possibly mechanics have more infections than most?

A poster on Educate Yourself says "I seem to have stumbled upon a chain of information that links Morgellons with Chemtrails, rashes in public schools, increased rate of Cancer, the new bugs found deep in the Antartic with their homeworld of Jupiter's moon, Europa."

Okey dokey now! For those of you who don't know (I didn't) , "Chemtrails" are, according to ChemTrail Central

What are Chemtrails? Streaks of chemicals created in the air by spray systems on airplanes at any altitude. Chemicals are sprayed via planes for many purposes including crop dusting and mosquito control. Also fuel is sometimes dumped to reduce weight before landing. But within the Chemtrail observer community Chemtrails are the product of an active large scale operation.

Chemtrails are said to vary from contrails in their length of persistence.

What the hell is really going on? Some people are reporting what they describe to be unusual activity in the sky, including jets leaving trails at low altitudes, spray lines creating X's, S's and parallel lines, lines that slowly spread to create a canopy of haze, and reports of unusual smells, tastes, and even illness related to the trails.

Also, a reddish-brown gel, dropped from low-flying aircraft, has been observed by people in the past and was even documented on Unsolved Mysteries. Samples of this substance have been alledgedly analyzed by Margareta-Erminia Cassani and found to be teaming with biological organisms.

And people say that Morgellons is all in your head. See? People are much more rational than that, right? It's obviously related to aircraft spraying strange biological organisms. Perhaps these are black aircraft?

They look like ordinary contrails, but it's really the government doing secret experiements! The truth is out there!

Anything that has both Popular Mechanics and the, say, eccentric community interested is a news juggernaut. Time to get on the bandwagon. Saddle up.

Actually, because of the popularity, I'm getting a little less interested by the day. It was fun when it was new and there wasn't much buzz. Now everybody is getting in on the act.

If being "open to suggestion", was the only cause, I don't think you'd see the results like we do in the map below. Unless, of course, you think that most eccentric or open to suggestion people live in Texas, California, and Florida. Not going to go there!

Current geographical view of the outbreak. Significant clusters exist inside each of these areas.

Some things, the Baltimore Sun points out, are just hard to diagnose, and that's for the diseases we have defined! Certainly we don't believe we have every disease defined, do we?

But the odds are, if you have something strange, that it is in your head. That has to be a given. Doctor Chris Rangel says

Most non-psychiatrist physicians are hugely reluctant to make a diagnosis of a somatoform disorder in these patients. They fear the potential legal and professional ramifications should they diagnose the problem as "idiopathic" when actually the patient really has pathology and the doctor is an idiot.

But even deeper is the concern among most physicians that their patients will react very adversely to being told that no physical cause for their symptoms can be found and that in all likelihood they suffer from a psychiatric disorder. I.e. "it's all in your head".

It's not a baseless concern. To have a psychiatric cause for a physical symptom caries very negative connotations in our society. Patients fear that people (including their own family members) will consider them to be "crazy" or be accused of "faking" their symptoms for secondary gain.

However, these patients are neither crazy nor are they faking their symptoms (part of the process of making the diagnosis of somatoform disorder is ruling out malingering i.e. patients who fake pain to get narcotics or win lawsuits). These disorders are as real as depression and now two new studies suggest that reassuring these patients that their symptoms are not caused by some horrible disease can be quite therapeutic.

People are funny. One bunch says the government is spraying us up with chemicals and another bunch says let's not tell people they have psychosomatic disorders because it might make them upset! When you don't know, you just fill in the blank with whatever opinions you have about the world. Doc Rangel thinks physicians should be more agressive with patients with somatoform disorders, other people think other things. It's like a big ol' game of Mad-Libs.

I read on one site that Morgellons is associated with Lyme Disease (can't find the link, sorry). Finally, one of my favorites comes from a site called "Terrapin Therapy" (turtle therapy?) Which says that the cause of Morgellons, you guessed it, is juvenile beetles:

"The juvenile beetles move to a feeding spot and produce long filaments. Later they move to the edge of the cactus pad where the wind catches the wax filaments and carries the cochineals to a new host."

The filaments produced by the juvenile beetles and the filaments of Morgellons are an interesting coincidence.

We believe that the Cochineal/Carminic acid food coloring is safe, just as peanuts are safe. However some of us have an allergic reaction to peanuts, some of us to Cochineal/Carminic acid.

Our therapy for Morgellons energectically clears the Chicken Pox pathogen and dismantles the vibrational form of all aspects of the Cochineal beetle, including the filamentations. Like most vibrational therapies, there is no need to be here in person. Therapy is administered to you by way of a spot of your blood that you mail in to us from a pricked finger. The cost of the therapy is $295.00 and will be tailored uniquely to you.

Hey, for $295 I would hope they would dismantle the vibrational form of the beetles. I hate it when you get vibrating beetles hanging around the house.

My take? i think Morgellons is part of a secret invasion of alien plants done to prepare the Earth for colonization for beings from another world. Either that, or I don't know. Pick one. (grin)

I have to go now, my turtle's beetles are vibrating.

Recently I created a list of books that hackers recommend to each other -- what are the books super hackers use to help guide them form their own startups and make millions? hn-books might be a site you'd like to check out.
On the low-end of the spectrum, I realized that a lot of people have problems logging into Facebook, of all things. So I created a micro-site to help folks learn how to log-in correctly, and to share various funny pictures and such that folks might like to share with their friends. It's called (appropriately enough) facebook login help
