Trying to be Mistaken

| | Comments (0)

As I've said before, I have my doubts about the Global Warming political movement and debate. So much of it seems emotionally-based and overblown. In addition, I have major concerns with end-of-world scenarios. From both history and personal experience, believing that we're bad people somehow morally at fault for evil in the world seems a sign of a troubled emotional state, not reasoned discussion.

But that's the politics side. On the science side, I don't know Jack. I am skeptical, which is a good thing to be when talking about science. So, I'm ordering a series of college lectures on Global Warming by a leading authority. Wil lthat make me an expert? Hardly. But I want to know more, and if there's something there, I want to know about it. I strongly feel that the highest duty we have as humans is the duty to try to be mistaken -- the duty to not only challenge and examine our beliefs, but to actively seek out people who can tell us we're wrong.

After all, if you're right and the other guy is wrong, you need to be able to discuss the issues on his/her terms. And if you're wrong and the other guy is right, you need to give them the best chance possible to convince you of your error and help you out. Either way, it's win-win.

Recently I created a list of books that hackers recommend to each other -- what are the books super hackers use to help guide them form their own startups and make millions? hn-books might be a site you'd like to check out.
On the low-end of the spectrum, I realized that a lot of people have problems logging into Facebook, of all things. So I created a micro-site to help folks learn how to log-in correctly, and to share various funny pictures and such that folks might like to share with their friends. It's called (appropriately enough) facebook login help
