IBM Sends Thousands More Jobs to India

| | Comments (1)

In a leaked document released the other day to the press by an anti-off-shore lobbying group, IBM plans to continue moving thousands of jobs to India. I just hope that somebody at IBM has read the Gartner report on issues related to offshore development. This looks like a trend that is here to stay, and it will be up to all of us to figure out how to work through the issues of global team management. It's hard enough to run a team in the same location where everybody is a member of the same culture, it's going to be a bear to work the new teams of the 21st century.

I really think the biggest problem is going to be language and culture; something I don't think most Americans understand. In many places, for instance, it's considered rude to disagree with a superior. So the "correct" thing to do is smile and agree. Even when you think it's a dumb idea.

Language is also a killer. How many times do we use euphemisms, metaphor, colloquialisms, and similes to express complex thoughts? "Down the road we're going to have to address scalability. You can't run a row boat with only one oar" Is this person talking about moving down a road? Floating in a boat? It's not always clear what the person is talking about when you are a native speaker, much less with the barrier of a second language added.

Please understand. I do not in any way mean to demean the good people in other countries and cultures who, some of which, are as good or better workers than we are here. I'm just saying from practical experience. How many times have I sat around with people who all looked like me, talked like me, and came from the same general background as me? And we all agreed on what the requirements and goals of the program were. Then later, it was like we were in completely different meetings! Everybody heard and experienced something completely different.

Somebody will need to get a handle on these critical two issues. I think the MAT is a good start at working these problems. I'd like to see more work done in this area.

I don't think so.
