Brains Anyone?

| | Comments (1)

How much of what we do actually changes the way our brain is wired? Aside from this man who suddenly learned how to play the piano, scientists are telling us now that years of practice at anything changes the way our brains work. This means that if you've been doing your job for a long time, it's probably changed the way your brain works.

For a long time we've given personality tests to aspiring young workers in order to "match" them to the most appropriate job. Now it seems the process may also work in reverse.

For those of you who love studies, this recent one was on personalities and firefighters. Among the gems here:

However, what surprised the researchers was the finding that after an injury, married female firefighters returned to work the earliest, followed by unmarried male, unmarried female and married male firefighters

and
"...chronic exposure to loud industrial noise was found to increase blood pressure overtime and to reduce job satisfaction, especially for those with complex jobs..."

That's from the "had to be obvious department" How was THAT done? "Here, let me yell in your ear while you try some brain surgery"
I've had the privilege to work in a variety of environments over the years. Many times I've heard people comment about "Well, that's a personality trait that most everyone that does this job has" I never thought much about it, but now I wonder how much does the personality change the job, and how much does the job change the personality? Perhaps instead of matching people up with jobs that match their personality, we should try to match them up with jobs that matches the personality traits they would like to have.

Recently I created a list of books that hackers recommend to each other -- what are the books super hackers use to help guide them form their own startups and make millions? hn-books might be a site you'd like to check out.
On the low-end of the spectrum, I realized that a lot of people have problems logging into Facebook, of all things. So I created a micro-site to help folks learn how to log-in correctly, and to share various funny pictures and such that folks might like to share with their friends. It's called (appropriately enough) facebook login help
