Infrastructure -- Not As Sexy, but More Important

| | Comments (0)

Everybody wants to write the killer application, the killer web site, the killer marketing plan. When a program like the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter comes along, it doesn't get a lot of attention. That's a shame.

The orbiter will map the surface, atmosphere, and subsurface of Mars, sure, but the real benefit from the program will be the high-speed data link it will provide back to earth. I've said it for a while, we desperately need a standard XML format for planetary exploration, a standard communications platform for high-speed inter-planetary communications, and a mass-produced modular sensor system for science exploration. To me, after reducing Cost-To-Orbit (say that takes 10-15 years), this would be the next goal for NASA. And these infrastructures should be built for anticipated large-scale human presence in those locations. Once again, let universities and the private sector do the glamorous science work, somebody has to make sure the widgets work and the bolts are all tight. Not as sexy as pictures of RC mars cars, but certainly more necessary.
