Potter Patter (no spoilers)
In the spirit of providing feedback, here's my take on the new Harry Potter book (no spoilers)
I spent the entire day reading the latest Potter, and I am beginning to think J.K. is one of those writers that I laughed a lot at in high school. You know the type -- self-indulgent pitter-patter, just sort of banal inner-directed chit-chat mixed in with poorly designed dialog and plot devices.
Ok -- I liked the book. But I've had about enough. The first one was nice, the next couple were okay, the gig is getting old. It's like watching Star Trek Next Generation: after a while you think "If Wesley saves the ship one more time, I'm going to throw my shoe at the TV"
I tried throwing my shoe at the book, but it was nowhere near as dramatic. That's not saying Potter saves anything -- I'm not saying what happened or not. Suffice it to say that you can't have a run of six books with "Harry Potter" in the title without getting sick and tired of the chap named Potter. Jiminy Cricket! How long does it take the kid to grow up!
So if you're a Potter fan like me, read the book. What else can you do? They've got us hooked now: we'll be reading the next sack of slop that comes out in two years and be thankful we got it. Such is the power of story-telling. J.K -- I hope you like the new pool, the jet, the new house, and the PR firm. We've got one more book together and then, I promise, I'm reaching for the shoe.

I haven't cracked any of the Potter books and I haven't seen the movies, but even if they're a bunch of Hogwart hogwash I think it's an incredible feat that J.K. has kids devouring 800 page books--and doing so in spite of the knowledge that a movie version is just around the corner!
That's an excellent point. Look -- I'm not in the target demographic, and I read it too. While the quality of the books themselves may be lacking, the fact that so many people are actually interested in reading has to be a good thing.
