Quality TV -- Can Reporters Be Participants?
The big hubbub tonight seems to be that CNN Miles O'Brien was in negotiations with NASA to become the first journalist to fly in space. How could he do it? Wouldn't it tarnish his reputation? How could he remain impartial? Talk about a tempest in a teapot!
First, if space travel weren't so ridiculously expensive and reserved just for elite government candidates, the entire discussion would be moot. Secondly, who says reporters can't participate? Let him take the ride and tell us the story. We can figure it out. I mean, we all really know why John Glen went back up, don't we?
It's this kind fuzzy-headed thinking -- that somehow journalists can be humans -- that ruins the fun for everyone. Frankly, there is something a little envious about the other media outlets complaining about O'Brian. There are a lot of sour grapes that I'm hearing. These guys need to get a life.
