Artificial Womb + Stem Cell = Headaches
There's a column in slate today that is giving me a headache. We've all talked about stem cells and morality, and I'm not going to beat that gong any more. But with the development of artificial wombs, that means that you can have babies without ever having mothers Yikes! An Excedrin moment.
Science is getting way ahead of the law and ethics, and the result is a fascinating discussion on what is human, what is sentient, what is moral, what is life. Hey -- those answers are way above my pay grade. I just read this stuff and try to make sense of it all.
Sentience I'm willing to take a crack at. Seems to me the use of language, or symbolic communication, and the ability to empathize with others defines one as sentient. Unfortunatley for my headache, it's looking like chimps who use sign language might fall into that category. So there goes my famous chimp-soup recipe.
What's life? That's even more troublesome. I'm beginning to really believe that the internet is a new life-form on this planet. Probably one far superior to humans. I will make that case in another blog, but that also is a weird thing to think about.
What is moral? What is ethical? Aside from the obvious practical advice like don't steal paperclips from work, I don't thinkg we are going to agree on the theory. I think that progress can be made -- I have utilitarian libertarian leanings myself -- but I am not happy that the level of discussion so far in our society is adequate for the questions posed. Furthermore, leaving such decisions to professional ethicists sounds like complete lunacy, seeing as how we are all going to pay the price of any mistakes.
What we need is another John Locke, another John Stuart Mill, or another Tommy Jefferson. What we got is Howard Stern, PeeWee Herman, and argument-for-entertainment on television and blogs. It will be interesting to see how we figure this out. I'm just hoping that I can grow baby dolphins in my kitchen in order to feed them to my internet connection. So far, the coast looks clear.
