Salad Dressing? In a Spray Bottle?

| | Comments (1)

Sounds kind of weird, eh? But once you think about it, perhaps spay-on salad dressing is a neat idea. Unilever is certainly betting on it: next month the concept should hit the shelves. What other inventions are on tap from this week? Hint: if you live in the USA, you might be fighting for living space with camels and elephants.

That's right: some scientists want to bring back elephants, camels, lions and cheetahs. This is all about "restoring nature to what it should be". I've always understood the need to preserve nature -- where I part company is when one person things they know "what it should be". I mean, why not bring back the Giant Sloth, the Wooly Mammoth, and some of the other cool animals, like the Sabre-Toothed Tiger? They would be a lot more fun to have around than stuff you can find somewhere else. As for me, I don't think the plan will ever fly, as much as I'd like to see some big cats eat my neighbors. Why? Because, as we all know, cheetahs never win.
My favorite invention from the past week probably has to do with nanotechnology. Seems that scientists at the UT and some Australian organizations have created 'nanotube sheets' -- which have these properties:

Self-supporting, transparent and stronger than steel or high-strength plastics, the sheets are flexible and can be heated to emit light.
A square mile of the thinnest sheets, about 2-millionths-of-an-inch thick, would weigh only about 170 pounds.
In lab tests, the sheets demonstrated solar cell capabilities, using sunlight to produce electricity.

Sounds neat, but I have to agree with one of the scientists, who said, "We do need to think of a catchier name than 'nanotube sheets,'" Story here.
