Mario Turns 20, Nintendo Shows Off New Controller

| | Comments (5)

Mario, that loveable little guy sho started out having problems with a big gorilla named "Donkey Kong" and ended up a pop icon, turned 20 this week. There is some debate on this topic, however, as Donkey Kong is much older (1981). We think Nintendo is counting years since his first appearance on their console in "Super Mario Brothers" but he could also just be lying about his age.

The company is also showing off the new game controller, which can be operated with one hand. It even has a little "sidekick" for the other hand. Interesting design -- I wonder if it will be popular.

This new control design looks retarded! And my guess is it is just another way to suck money out of the consumer's pocket. I love Nintendo games, but I get really tired of the video game picking my pocket.

Forgot to say, Happy Birthday, Mario! Hope you have many many more!

And to think that I thought the Gamecube controller was bad. What are they thinking/smoking?
I predict that this will be another nail in the Big N's coffin.

I agree it looks weird. You'd think that they would have done some studies to make sure it was going to work and people were going to like it. For some reason, they seem convinced that "one-handed" controllers are hot. I just don't get it.

A one piece controller justs seems like an obvious way to go for video games. I like the feeling of current controllers, like holding a small steering wheel. They should call it the revolutionary "loss of controller".

I saw a show on TV yesterday that had a "Brain-Machine Interface" -- seems like a lot of people are working on that now. This one guy had a headband you wore and you could control the mouse on the computer. Maybe one of these will be the next-gen controller. I also saw these glasses that shoot low-powered lasers into your retina to make images. Wouldn't that be cool? A headband and sunglasses where you could play all the games you wanted wherever you went.

Recently I created a list of books that hackers recommend to each other -- what are the books super hackers use to help guide them form their own startups and make millions? hn-books might be a site you'd like to check out.
On the low-end of the spectrum, I realized that a lot of people have problems logging into Facebook, of all things. So I created a micro-site to help folks learn how to log-in correctly, and to share various funny pictures and such that folks might like to share with their friends. It's called (appropriately enough) facebook login help
