Spring Cleaning
It's that time of year again, when you get out the cleaning supplies, the rubber gloves, the scrubby brushes and --- clean up your blog.
C'mon folks, you know who you are. Those of you with the flaming widgets of fear, the walking dogs, the animated Hitlers (yes I mean you Wulf), the automatic debt clocks. Some of you, and I won't mention names, have dancing gerbils.
Do you really need all of that junk on your blog? I visit some blogs and they look like Las Vegas -- there's so much blinking and flashing that I don't know if I'm reading a blog or playing a slot machine. A friend of mine has a blog that take about 2 minutes to load -- and that's on a high-speed connection.
So I got out the CSS toolkit, the alternate browsers, and some editorial scissors and went to town today on this blog. As you can see, it has a lot cleaner look that before. The only "flashy" thing I have is batBack, and that tells you the best articles on the batBack system so I thought it was a good trade (plus I wrote it.)
Are you ready? Can you make the jump? Repeat after me, "simple is good. simple is good" Take some deep breaths. Repeat your affirmations. You can make do with just one animated smiley, really you can. And the fireworks? They probably get old to visitors after a few visits. If you can't bring yourself to clean up your blog, then perhaps we could get doctor Phil to make a blogcall. It's time to stop living the fantasy and just get real, folks.
Comments on the new look are appreciated. Also -- what things do you have on your blog that you just can't give up?

It looks nice, clean and a bit sterile, but it does make batback stand out more! I think how many things you put on your site depends on what you want your site to be. If it is a business attracting site, plain and simple is good.
But if you are creating your online corner of the world, make it homey, let people know who you are! I just found a lovely calendar to display on my site that I really like. I also like Captain Bob's slide show about 9-11. And I love my little tickers as they keep me motivated with exercise and weight loss and did I mention I am thinking about adding blinkies and music! Home Sweet Home...need I say more????
Of course, your site doesn't need any cleaning at all, dear. Just like you, it is perfect. And I am not just saying that because you are my wife and know where I live and can kill me while I sleep. I really mean it.
