New Zealand pics - 2

Jack and I wanted to hike the Tongariro pass,
but the mountain had other ideas

View from the roadside leaving the Tongariro park on the way south

They tell us the south island has more scenery, but the views along the roadside Saturday were gorgeous

Wellington has a population of around 300,000
It's the capital of New Zealand (there aren't a lot of people here)

There were some spectacular views from the ferry on the way south

The Inter-Islander ferry was huge, yet nimbly handled these tight straits

Welcome to Picton in the South Island, population 12,000
It's one of the bigger towns in the South

Mount Cook is the biggest mountain in the north part
of the south island, and can be seen from the north
Here is a view from a hike I took along the way south

I am continually amazed at how rural the area is right up to the ocean
We saw cattle grazing in many places next to the seaside
